Below are some ways for staying safe while you are studying abroad.

Avoid Sharing Your Personal Information

It is a good thing to be open to new people and experiences during your time away, but you also have to keep some personal information to yourself. Do not overshare to too many people especially when it comes to your full name, address of your host family or other accommodation you have made during your stay in the region. It is important to make sure that your address and contact info are all in a safe place so that you can go to your destination safely. It will take some time for you to adjust to your new environment and you might get lost.

Travel in Groups

Every time you go out or traveling in your host country, make sure to stay in a big group. You will feel safer if you go out or travel in group. In case you do not have a group to travel along with, make sure that you have at least one companion with you. Do not walk on the streets at night and be mindful to your surroundings. Do not make any stops when traveling if it is not important, and it is advisable if you map out a well-lit and direct route from one location the next.

Learn about Your Surroundings

Right before you move abroad, learn as many things as much as possible about the place and its inhabitants. Does your path of travel close to a high-crime area and unsafe neighborhood? It is also important to learn as much as possible regarding the public transportation there. Most tourist and non-native are usually attacked in buses, subways, taxi cabs, and popular sites. Stay away from cabs that are not registered to the city. Moreover, never take a ride from someone you do not know. No matter how far you are going to walk. Knowing how the public transport system functions will help you blend in with the natives.

Speak Their Language

Learning how to speak their language is a great way for staying safe. If you do not understand what they are talking to you, you can get yourself into a lot of problems. Speaking their language also means that you pay respect to your host country and its inhabitants. If you can communicate correctly to the inhabitants, you appear more confident. Learning their language is a way to learn about their culture.
